Director: Theresa Caudle
Canzona’s project “Venetian Graces: Music from 17th century Venice and beyond” has been very popular. Unusually, the three soloists all play baroque violin and also a wind instrument – cornett (Theresa Caudle), recorder (Rebecca Miles) and sackbut (Emily White). They are accompanied by Alistair Ross on the harpsichord and organ, and the concert is a showcase of all the different sonorities which various combinations of the instruments can provide.
Each player has a solo sonata, and then there are duets and trios of wonderful virtuosity
and variety -
The programme was premiered in Blackmoor, Hampshire in 2013. In 2014 it was performed for the Georgian Concert Society in Edinburgh, Stour Music Festival in Kent, Winchester Festival and Sastamala Gregoriana Festival in Finland; and in 2016 for the Valetta International Baroque Festival, Malta.
The related programme Venetian Passions premieres in October 2016 in Hampshire and Edinburgh with Theresa Caudle (violin & cornett), Emily White (violin & sackbut), Jeremy West (cornett), Oliver Webber (violin) and Alastair Ross (harpsichord).
“I can't tell you how much I and everyone present last night enjoyed Canzona's wonderful performance. The spiel about the instruments and composers was so interesting too. I'm sure that the concert opened the eyes, or rather ears, of many to the glories of Venetian 17th century music. Judging by the size of the audience it was quite the best attended concert we've had.”

Comments from our audience……..
“With apologies for an email of thanks but what a splendid and wholly unusual concert on Saturday. The talent and versatility was exceptional and I have to admit that the composers and/or the pieces played were at least 80% unknown to us!”
“I thought Canzona were magnificent and musically very interesting, and Joanna must be congratulated on finding and capturing such a group. On our doorstep, moreover: I would drive a long way to hear them again.”
“…….wonderful concert where EVERY piece, including instructive introduction, was a joy and revelation not least among which revelations was the versatility and piano capability of the sackbut. Thank you for an enchanting evening.”
“I enjoyed the concert enormously and was most interested in the explanations. I had three friends who all felt it was the best concert that they had attended in Blackmoor by a long way.”
